Major Agreement Signed to Procure Machinery for National Infrastructure Development

Under a special initiative of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, a major agreement has been signed to address the shortage of heavy machinery required for infrastructure development projects across the Maldives.

The Business Cooperation Agreement was signed today at a ceremony held in China between XCMG, the world’s third-largest heavy machinery manufacturer, and Infrastructure Development Solutions (IDS). The transaction was facilitated under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Road Development Corporation (RDC) and IDS, with the objective of securing essential resources for large-scale infrastructure projects implemented by RDC.

Under the agreement, 230 units of heavy machinery, including asphalt machinery critical for road construction projects nationwide, will be procured and brought to the Maldives. This marks the largest single procurement of machinery in the history of infrastructure development in the country.

In addition to equipment procurement, XCMG and IDS will jointly establish a dedicated service center and spare parts hub in the Maldives. This initiative will ensure timely maintenance and technical support for the machinery, minimizing downtime and enabling infrastructure projects to proceed without disruption.

The Government aims to accelerate national development through this initiative and provide a long-term, sustainable solution to logistical challenges faced in infrastructure works. The agreement represents a significant milestone in the efforts of President Dr. Muizzu’s administration to strengthen and modernize the country’s infrastructure sector.

The agreement was signed on behalf of IDS by its Managing Director, Mr. Ibrahim Nazim, who also serves as the Managing Director of RDC. Mr. Tu Hui, General Manager for the South Asia Region, signed on behalf of XCMG. The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Zhai Kun, General Manager of XCMG’s Global Business Division, and Mr. Mohamed Nabeeh Afeef, Senior Deputy Managing Director of RDC.

This agreement is expected to significantly ease challenges related to the availability of heavy machinery for infrastructure projects across the Maldives. The establishment of a local service center and spare parts facility will also help eliminate project delays previously caused by equipment breakdowns and maintenance constraints.
